School is over next Thursday; not even a week left. Then we'll go to college and continue with our lives. Some people say that they're going to see each other often when they go to Boston, Philly, or New York. That's all a lie. To be honest, even though I often tell people that i'll definitely keep in touch them after we finish class, I know that that is far from the truth. I'll only keep in touch with a handful of my closest friends, if anything. I mean, do you blame me? I want to go to Lehigh and meet new people, form new bonds, not be speaking with the same people I grew up with in high school, like many other Puertoricans do. You see, that whole Puertorican experience many people go through in which they are raised with the same people during elementary school, continue hanging out with them during high school, then all go to the same states (Boston and New York, for example) to continue being with them and hang out with other Puertoricans is simply not my thing. I really, and I mean REALLY don't want to go to college and be stuck with the Puertorican/Latino crowd many people choose to join. I want change. I don't want to go to college to basically relive high school, with the same crowd, having the same conversations.

And something else, I plan on staying in the United States when I graduate. Not because I don't like the people from Puerto Rico (I do like them, a lot actually, they're my people), but because Puerto Rico sucks and it's basically an opportunity wasteland. The United States does it better.

I agree with you that you should start new. Find new friends, new experiences, and don't stay too tied to the past. It is not necessary to come back and visit Saint Johns every holiday, nor keep in touch with all of your classmates, because let's be honest, some of them have nothing in common with you. I hardly keep in touch with the people I was friends with in high school, and I am have no regrets about it.
But, Puerto Rico will always be yours, even if you never decide to come back to it. It is only an opportunity wasteland to those who don't take advantage of all of the the amazing resources and beauties and talents that exist. I'm not saying you have to come back, but eventually I hope you do see the beauty that this island is, and the hand it had in making you the person you are today.
