Once the bell rang, Amelia ran out of the classroom to make her way home. She was always excited about the end of the day because of what it meant when she got home: snack time! Amelia loved snack time, and she was hoping that today her mom had bought some sweet snacks. So she started out on her brief walk home, passing all the usual places along the way. But strangely enough, when she passed the post office on her left, she saw someone walking next to a strange and huge white animal that had black spots all over it. She had never seen one before, so she crossed the street to ask the man about it.
“Excuse me sir, but what are you standing next to?”
The man looked up and met his eyes with hers. He cracked a smile at her question and responded “This is a cow”.
And so for the next few minutes, the man and Amelia continued talking about cows and their disappearance from the Earth. He explained how humans used to eat cows, and how the last generation to really know of their existence would be that of her parents.
A little confused by the whole situation, Amelia left with tons of questions in her head. She eventually reached her house and opened the door that left her right in the kitchen. For a second, she forgot about the cow and focused on her snack. Yessss, she thought, mom bought cockroaches and beetles. Those were her favorite things to eat. Her whole life she had eaten insects; everyone did. Amelia had never even heard about a cow before that afternoon, and really had no idea what it was. The man explained to her that people used to eat them, which made no sense to her. Eating anything but bugs and insects didn’t seem to add up in her head.
So she kept munching and crunching away at her cockroaches and beetles, enjoying her afternoon snack.
