Pure Happiness

Posted by Richard J on February 19, 2015 at 10:15 AM

Is it weird that the one time I felt pure happiness was while I was working? I don't think so. I mean, yes, I was cooking scrambled eggs for 400 people, and yes, I spent whole mornings refilling countless cereal containers. But I was never alone, and I was never bored (ok, maybe sometimes). But I think it was pure happiness because I wasn't doing it for me; it was being done for a greater cause.

And the best part about it is that you see the results. You see your hard work bring fruition in the joy on campers' faces when you bring them giant cookie sundaes, and their immense smiles when you serve them sand pudding. Their genuine thank-you's are more than enough, but every feeling of accomplishment is multiplied by a thousand when you see those campers stand up at the Say-So.

Is it weird that my pure happiness came with no pay, 12 hr. work days, 1 hr. breaks, and terribly-planned American schedules? Maybe a little, but I wouldn't have it any other way.
