Where have you gone ?

For Johnny, life on a farm was the best type of life there was. He loved breathing the fresh air and waking up to the crow of the roosters each morning. Most of all, Johnny loved that he was far away from the city. He never really liked it there. All the dirty looks and the impersonality of people along with the hustle and bustle of the place didn’t really fit him. He was more laid back and he cared greatly about what he did. And he found someone with whom he shared a love for the countryside, this person, was his wife Melissa, and their two dogs, Sasha and Nala, who lived with them on the farm. Melissa and Johnny had been married for around seven years and never got tired of each other. And his love for her could not be explained by words. He did not show it much, but she was all he really had other than the farm and Johnny could not see the day where they would were apart.

Throughout their day, Johnny and Melissa would care for the farm. Johnny would tend to the corn fields while Melissa tended to the chickens and pigs. Both of them always accompanied by one of the dogs, which would split up just to make sure their masters were okay always. Although some people would find this type of job boring, they thought it was the best job in the world.

One quiet night, Johnny and Melissa were eating supper when they were startled by the sudden barking of both Sasha and Nala. Johnny stood up and yelled at them to be quiet but they kept on barking. Since they kept on going, Johnny grabbed his rifle and went to check if something had happened. He followed the noise made by the barking dogs which led him to the chicken coop. When he looked around he saw that there was a mess of feathers all over the place. Johnny quickly cocked his rifle and began to look around. He found nothing. Absolutely nothing, no chickens, no eggs, just a coop full of feathers. Johnny ran back to the house and explained what happened to Melissa, who then went outside to see the coop. After seeing this, they were both curious about who could have done this because nothing like that had ever happened to them. Nevertheless, they finished supper and went to sleep later on, but Johnny did not leave his gun too far away from him for the rest of the night.

Weeks had passed by and Melissa and Johnny had forgotten about the incident in the chicken coop. They bought a couple of more chickens and kept on going with their lives. It bothered the couple that they had to clean up the mess and that their chickens were gone but since they did not know who did it, their anger slowly dissipated. Nothing odd had happened on the farm since that night, but one morning when Johnny was getting up from bed he looked out his window and could not believe his eyes. The corn fields were leveled, not everywhere though, as if someone had purposely made some designs on the fields that could only be seen from the sky. He woke up Melissa and they both went to see fields up close. All the stalks of corn had been bent perfectly, as if someone had a special machine to do this. Then Johnny decided to see what exactly had been drawn in the fields, so he got on the roof of his house to see it. There he saw how huge the design was, it spread throughout the whole field, different circles all different sizes connected by lines. Now Johnny wasn’t stupid, he had always heard about all the alien rumors and what not, but he never really about it. He told Melissa about the design and she seemed rather startled and called the police.

Once the police arrived, Johnny explained to them all of the events of that morning and then went up to the roof with one of the officers. There they saw the design once again. The officers were left in shock and had no response for Johnny. One of them just told him that it may be some kids trying to be funny and not to worry about it, but the looks on his face told Johnny otherwise. However, Melissa seemed more relaxed and that was all Johnny needed, but now Johnny did not leave his gun too far away from his reach. That night, Johnny did not sleep very well. He left Sasha and Nala sleeping on the front porch so they could guard the house or warn Johnny and Melissa if anything was coming. His mind wandered over what was happening, and all he could see in his mind was the officer’s worried face when he saw the design in the corn field.

The next day, Johnny tried to resume his daily routine of working on the field even though he was very tired and still trouble about what had happened the day before. Right as Johnny was about to get in the tractor, he heard a scream near the house. He sprinted towards the sound and found Melissa. In front of her lay Nala and Sasha, both dead. Johnny was shocked. There was no blood anywhere so Johnny guessed their necks had been broken. When he touched the bodies they were stiff and cold. The couple stopped did not proceed to do their daily work. Johnny ignored the fields and began digging two holes where Sasha and Nala were to be buried. Melissa sat on the porch, crying a little but mostly just sitting there, in shock. They knew it wasn’t a prank anymore, something serious was going on. Melissa was about to call the police again, but Johnny stopped her because he knew they wouldn’t do anything. The couple was so confused about what was going on that they just sat in the house without any idea of what to do.

The next day Johnny woke up and Melissa was not at his side. He guessed that she woke up and was downstairs making breakfast since he heard some pots and pans clanging. Johnny came downstairs and went to the kitchen where he found pots and pans thrown all over the place, as well as a broken faucet. Johnny panicked. He ran to his gun, made sure it was loaded, cocked it and searched the house for Melissa while looking down the sights of the gun. She was nowhere to be found in the house so Johnny ran outside. That’s when he caught a glimpse of what was happening. Something was carrying Melissa, uncounscious, into the corn fields. He sprinted towards them as they disappeared between the tall stalks of corn when Johnny was suddenly knocked back. It felt like an airplane was taking off almost right in front of him. The winds were so strong that he was pushed back a couple of yards, but he saw nothing in the sky. Then all of a sudden, it stopped. It was all quiet. Johnny ran into the field and searched everywhere for Melissa, but could not find her. As he went back to the house he was slowly giving up. With no idea about what just happened Johnny fell into a state of shock.

Now, Johnny realized that life on the farm on his own is not what he loved. He didn’t care much about the fresh air and he even sold the rest of the animals on the farm. Neither did he care much about whether he lived in the city or the countryside. What Johnny had really cared about throughout his whole adult life was being with Melissa. And now that she wasn’t there, Johnny didn’t really care about anything else other than seeing her again. So now, he waits patiently on his farm, with his new dog by his side, for the return of whatever took Melissa. He hopes it comes back to take him, so that he may actually be reunited with his one and only love wherever it may be.
