The Art in the Kitchen

Posted by Sariemma Mendez on November 7, 2014 at 5:05 AM

Cooking is an art. To create a recipe it needs time and patience. To make a recipe, you combine colors and flavors to make something delicious. Once you make a dish its time to make art. The plate itself is like a canvas. It needs color and design. It needs movement and diversity. When designing a plate, it needs to be fantastic. Each person has their own idea of how their ideal painting would look like. Everyone is unique in the flavors they choose to mix. That is what makes a chef unique. They can have the ability to create a new dish using maybe even the same flavors as they used before, only this time creating something new. I consider myself to be a chef artist. I do not know how to explain this passion I have had for so long. It is something that I feel has always called my attention since I was very small. Cooking in general can be easy. But what is interesting is the art behind it. Making boiled macaroni and cheese can be considered cooking. But really it is food made by following instructions on a box. The beauty of cooking is being free to write your own instructions.

A few years ago, I got to go to a camp in Florence about cooking. It was one of the best experiences in my life. I got to make fettuccine pasta from scratch. It was really cool. I mixed several ingredients to make something that looked like dough. Later we flattened the dough and passed it through a machine where small yellow strings of pasta were formed.
