Thanksgiving Break

Posted by Hannah Greenfader on November 6, 2014 at 6:40 PM

My mother’s father lived in a small town called Szczuczyn, Poland. When Hitler came to power, they were deported to Siberia and were forgotten about. Most of the town’s Jews were killed but somehow my grandfather’s family survived. After the war, they settled in Cuba, where my grandfather met my grandmother and again were forced to flee when Fidel Castro came to power. They eventually settled in Puerto Rico. And that’s how I ended up in Puerto Rico.

In Thanksgiving break, I have the opportunity to go on a life changing trip to Poland, called “March of the Living.” This is not some trip where it’s going to be fun and games. On the contrary, it will be very meaningful, intense, and emotional trip. I will finally get to see what my ancestors lived through in the terrible times of the Holocaust.
