"Weekends at that Old Boat"

Posted by Kelly Ann Ocasio on October 16, 2014 at 10:00 PM

I’ll miss the weekends at sea.

The way the sun would paint my skin,

Lighten my hair and brighten my days.

I’ll miss seeing my island on the horizon being consumed by the lights of the sunset:

pink, orange, purple, red and all the colors in between.

I’ll miss the quiet of the night, the portrait of the stars and

the endless questions deep in my mind as I watched the starry night.

I’ll miss waking up and seeing nothing but mountains, the beach and the sea. The way I had no worries.

My only worry was what bathing suit I would wear that day.

I’ll miss my sister’s laughter as we jumped from the boat.

I’ll miss my mother telling us not to and my father’s smile of approval as he was taping the best days of our lives.

I'll miss how the boat and sea brought us together.

I’ll miss the carpet I took my first steps on, the bunk bed I slept for eighteen years, and the cockpit where I saw all the sunsets.

Hell, I’ll even miss the damn engine room where I learned about tools and helping my dad fix everything .

I'll miss the great friends I made which I only ever saw on weekends.

I’ll miss labor days at Las Pelas and spring breaks at Virgin Gorda.

I’ll miss the adventures, the laughter, the friends, my family…

I’ll miss not having the thought on my mind that on Friday I would stare out into the sea.

I’ll miss my favorite place. I’ll miss the great weekends.

This list is endleess...I can never fully express how much I'l miss the weekends at the sea.

But what I'll miss most is that old boat, which carries all my great memories.
