Pure Elation

Posted by Annika Schroder on August 14, 2014 at 6:15 PM

I don’t want to remember bad memories; I only want to remember the instances when the only emotion I feel is joy. The memories I love and cherish the most are the ones where I’m laughing so hard that I’m on the verge of crying. Most of these happen inside of my family’s giant navy blue Ford Expedition, specifically when my mom and sister are in the car.

We laugh constantly, joking with each other every chance we get. We bring up old memories and laugh about them, make fun of random things we hear about or see, and just tease each other for the sake of laughing. In that car, we act as if we’re friends, rather than having a mother-and-daughters dynamic.

We always say we should put a video camera in the car so that we can record these memories and revisit them years down the road.

Some of my happiest memories are in that car. Not only is it a place where I can laugh until I cry, but it’s a place where I can relax after a stressful day of school, and give myself a break from reality.

All I can do in those moments when I’m crying from laughing too hard is feel pure elation.
