Dear Hedley,
I don’t know how you did it. You fall in love, you have a family, and then the man you love chooses fame over you. You make so many sacrifices because you want the man you love to reach his dreams, and then he’s not grateful for it. You could’ve stayed home in the States, but instead you took a risk and moved with Hemmingway to Paris to begin the journey of his long-lasting writing career. The women that take those risks are very rare. You chose him over your career, but he chose otherwise. I can’t imagine the pain you felt when you knew he was interested in another woman and not interested in you anymore. You wanted to grow old together, but at the end he didn’t want the same thing. Love is not fair sometimes. You did everything for him out of love, but at the end of the day love wasn’t enough. I don’t write to tell you how sorry I feel about what happened between you and Hemmingway, I write to tell you how I admire you because besides it all you don’t regret a single thing about it and you stood by his side even when he didn’t deserve your presence.
Best, Maria Lugo
