Andy Warhol recreated Marilyn Monroe in many different ways. The iconic woman that will forever be remembered in history was another product of society. For Warhol, she was as beautiful, ugly, happy, sad, composed, distorted as anyone else. Warhol made her more beautiful in some of her portraits in this painting of the 9 Marilyns because some people saw her that way, but maybe others saw her as a monster, as something unnatural. Also, by recreating her so many times, there is doubt as to which is the true Marilyn; perhaps, people are a multiple of different faces and that is what Warhol wanted to convey.
Warhol also used this same technique with the famous Campbell cans. This then becomes a criticism of Monroe and what she stood for. For Warhol, judging on his paintings, he saw Monroe as replaceable, and a copy of what people wanted to see. Are we then true to ourselves, or just another copy of society?
