It was January 9th, just eight days a new year, and not normally a special day worth the anxiety that was rattling my rather tiny body. More specifically, it was twenty minutes to one on that January 9th. Twenty eternal minutes of pure anxiety until I would know whether or not the next four years of my life would be spent as a Yellow Jacket. My sister and I were in the middle of discussing just that when she urged me to check my email anyways because apparently she had received Georgia Tech’s acceptance email hours than anticipated. She was a Yellow Jacket and so was my dad, now hopefully it would be my turn to continue the legacy. Nineteen minutes! The stress could kill, so I signed in to my email on my cell phone because who has the time to get to a computer and sign in. Plus, college admission emails are the reason they invented smartphones, let’s be honest. Suddenly, my attention was diverted by my mom’s voice as she was talking to us, I don’t even know what about because through a blur all I remember was reading those few words. “Congratulations! You have been accepted to Georgia Institute of Technology!” Dumbfounded. I stared at my mom dumbfounded as time stood still. Suddenly the world sped up to catch up to my newfound reality. “I got into college! I got into Tech!” Then it was my mom’s and sister’s turn to stand in silence before we all hugged and cried tears of joy! Screaming, laughing, crying, hugging, and causing a ruckus. My dad ran upstairs confused by all the commotion, but when he realized what had happened he joined in and hugged me. He read my acceptance letter and declared that we would celebrate for the rest of the day, and if you know us Rays we definitely know how to celebrate!
