Living among Metal Beasts

Posted by Nick Y on December 10, 2015 at 7:55 AM

After centuries of roaming the land, the Nacirema people discovered an animal with various breeds whose evolution never ends. These beasts come in all shape and sizes and seems to be born with a shiny exoskeleton. They have four legs which allows them to move with great speeds, faster than galloping horses. They stand firm and roar loud. In Nacirema culture, people prize these beasts and many call them “Otua”. Individuals would tame, train, trade, and sell them for necessity or luxury. It is a daily lifestyle for an individual or family to posses such beasts, they make life easier, help business, and make traveling quicker. Once tamed, the beast could protect people from natural phenomenon such as rain, blazing heat, snow, ice, and more. Those who cannot afford a beast would need to borrow or ask a friend or request service.

People would tame the Otua by breaking the beast and placing saddles. To control the beast, one would enter a rigorous ritual of letters and numbers. Some may fail, and try several times before the strict final spell that lasts forever. After successfully passing the ritual, a small, shiny rectangle officializes a user to tame the Otua. Much like horses which the Nacirema people once used for hundreds of years, the Otua can be steered with a circular device. With a stick, a person could control the legs of the beast: to go forward, back, or stop. These fellow beasts have metal skin, they roar when agitated, and they are reliable companions. When riding one, safety is important, many accidents occur. When challenged to battle by other Otua beasts or their users, quick battles are taken place. Battles usually end quick and mostly luck can determine if one survives or not. Although the beast may die, it sure lived its purpose to serve its user. It is up to the user to save or tame a new beast.

When taken care of, the Otua could survive for decades only to be replaced by newer evolutionized breeds. After years of coexisting, Nacirema people have taken these beast for granted. Like the human population, the Otua’s population increases and ages. People continue to domesticate, maintain, and utilize these beast unaware of the environment damage they both can cause. Cost of maintaining one often fluctuates with its necessities to live. Still a vital resource to have, the Nacirema people continue the never ending tradition in their everyday lives.
