Cystic fibrosis is an inherited disease caused by a faulty gene from both parents. The gene controls the movement of salt and water in and out of the cells, so the lungs and digestive system become clogged, making it hard to breathe and digest food. Friday, November 13th was a day full of unfortunate deaths and atrocious destructions.
This past Friday heaven gained two new angels, Cristy and Maria Fernanda. They were cousins, and were both diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. Cristy was 25, and Maria Fernanda was 22. Cristy had survived multiple lung transplants, but this time her body simply couldn’t take it anymore. Cristy had a younger sister, Sarah, who was also diagnosed with cystic fibrosis and passed away when she was 12 because her body rejected the new lungs during her transplant. Maria Fernanda suffered the loss of her brother, Eduardo Jose, a few years ago, also because of cystic fibrosis. My heart broke when I saw what Cristy’s mother posted on “Cristy’s wish” page that Friday: “Fuck you cystic fibrosis, fuck you.” It took the lives of two of her four children. Life isn’t fair, and many people get what they don’t deserve. “Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, but love leaves a memory no one can steal.” RIP
