It was Pre-Kinder, and we were in the playground. I was not the girliest girl at the time, wearing the SJS dress and my blue/white basketball shoes. Enjoying my time playing tag, I was interrupted by Carolina, who suddenly came up to me. She stood there in my face, waiting to gain the full attention of four-year-old me (I could easily get distracted by a butterfly so it took a couple of minutes.) She was the definition of the girliest girly girl, with a huge white, green, and pink bow decorating her tiny, perfectly-styled head. A bow that still haunts my dreams.
When I finally realize that someone was standing in front of me, she curiously says, “What are you wearing?”
I look down at myself. I thought it was pretty obvious. “A dress and shoes.”
“No, but seriously, what are those? Think you are a dude?”
Without letting me reply, she shrugs and turns away, leaving me completely hurt and saddened.
Four-year-old me decided not to talk to her again, even though we lived in the same neighborhood and were in the same classes.
