Roads

Posted by Claudia Perez on January 10, 2014 at 12:55 AM

You will admit, you have never been good with directions

But when the sign said take a right onto the next road,

You kept going straight.

And when the next sign said take a left onto the next road,

You kept going straight.

And when all the other signs kept telling you to get off that one road,

That it was time to take the others,

Girl you can’t stick to this one flat road anymore,

It’s time to move on, take the turn.

You kept going straight.

It wasn’t the road you were supposed to be on,

And you know because it was flat

It was smooth and flat and brand-new,

The kind of road you would never see back home,

Because home meant holes that a whole tire could disappear into,

Meant cracks and graying gravel of a road you couldn’t even call well-traveled, just abused.

It was a road that bred no adversity, no troubles nor ill will.

Dorothy could have skipped down this road for how perfect it was.

But it had no character. And it gave you nothing.

So you took this one perfectly damned road,

Because it was perfectly safe,

And nothing could touch you there.
