First Step

Its not easy to take back words. Once you utter that noun, verb, adjective, phrase, or any thing else, it has been put in the world and there’s no way to take it back.

It’s like taking the first step into a field of untouched snow. You break the silence that previously rolled over the ocean of snow. That first step you take? It’s shape will remain. The possibility of it being filled is there...

The Worst Part of Censorship is __________ Part 2

Posted by Gabriela Rojo on January 23, 2014 at 10:30 PM Comments comments (0)

What is it that all books have in common? Whether they are banned or not? They all have valuable knowledge and/or a moral lesson that makes them worth reading! Books that end up banned because of certain mature themes are not just for exposing them to these themes. There is valuable knowledge in every book. “There are worse crimes than burning books. One of them is not reading them”. A common banned book misjudged by the violence contained is...

"Flamenco Sketches"

They danced excitedly.

Joyously.

Always lively.

There wasn’t a time when they did not smile.

They’d dance to jazz, to rock, to rhythm and blues. And they were perfectly content with just that.

But then they stopped dancing.

There were no longer any smiles on their faces.

And, if for some reason they found themselves swaying to music, they only seemed worried. Worried that their passion for music had grown. Grown and grown and grown un...

Kvon at San Se

Posted by Carlos Albors-Riera on January 23, 2014 at 9:05 AM Comments comments (0)

It was 7:00 PM and Kvon was getting in the zone. He put on contacts, unbuttoned his silky smooth shirt halfway, combed his hair, and was ready for a night on the town. His Abercrombie perfume would entince any female that so much as looked at him. After tonight, they'd have to put his name in the dictionary, under "player".

He didn't want any girl, though. He had his eyes set on a beautiful girl who had seduced him. He had to make his move.

He approached her, grabbed her by her sh...

to the boy who taught me the stars were mine

There's this big blue sky, there's this bright sun, there's that crystal blue ocean right there so close to the both of us. There are millions of little stars right above us, and for the first time, they are only shining for me. There's all this beauty in the world and I don't need you next to me to see it because it is all there for me to enjoy by myself.

Thank you. Because after all the disappointment and ache that you made me feel, I'm able to live for myself.

Gone

Push me away like you push that divine poison of yours

You call me only when you take a hit

I guess sober is no longer enough

We used to be able to handle pain, remember?

The day my dog got lost, the day you lost your father

Darling, we used to make love together

Entangling within each other, stealing hearts and lending life

I used to be the only thing that lifted you up that high

Now you’re a religious man

Oh, Christmas Tree

Posted by Claudia Perez on January 17, 2014 at 1:40 AM Comments comments (0)

Our Christmas tree is still up.

The theme: blue and silver.

Glittery bulbs, bows and fish hang off its branches.

Lights ever present; white to fit the theme.

Green as the moment it was shipped out of the factory.

I am not sure

If it is a testament to our spirit

Or our simple procrastination.

Chapter One

It's strange.

Honestly.

I mean, really strange.

My entire room is basically filled with books. Books on my desk. Books on my night table. Books under the desk. Books in drawers. Books on shelves. You get it.

Yet, despite all these pages and characters and stories and settings and feelings that decorate my room, I don't read.

Well, give me a minute.

I read. Hell, of course I read. But not as much as I would like. ...

Open Mind

Posted by Emily on January 17, 2014 at 12:20 AM Comments comments (0)

Open your mind to the world, leaving behind those fairytale dreams that seemed so real, so tangible. Yet they jump from your mind and dissipate into the connections of your memory. Your mind wanders an endless field filled with dictating schedules, events and nonsensical things that clutter your life. Plot every second of every minute in the literal blink of an eye. It has to be done. Its time unleash your conscious mind and put yourself to the test. All you have to do, is open your eyes. ...

Monotone

"The art of being happy lies in the power of extracting happiness from common things."

I think we, as a generation, often confuse sadness for lack of acute happiness. We stamp words like "depressed" or "suicidal" onto banalities of our everyday. A lack of a certain latte at Starbucks does not make you depressed, and the fact that you have to read a book for class is by no means a reason to say you want to kill y...
